Decorate it already…!

Mama will officially admit this to you (and only you)…Mama is in complete denial that this baby is coming any day now. Clothes and baby gear can currently be found in every room of the house and are still sitting in boxes waiting to be washed, sorted and put away. There are still some items to be purchased but for now, Mama thinks the basics are covered — diapers, wipes, a bassinet to sleep in and a few pajama onesies to get her through those first six weeks. In fact, when Baby Boy was born…Mama didn’t change his clothes until there was a blowout or he started to stink…literally. It was too exhausting to wash everything and change him everyday…plus, what’s more comfortable then PJS?!

On the other hand, Mama has found time to clean out the other two kids rooms to try and make space for #3′s items and find things that they’ve certainly grown out of. With the holidays and their birthdays on the horizon, it’s that time to try and purge…in fact, Mama likes doing this at least twice a year. Also while cleaning out the closets, I find never opened NEW items that can be donated to all those kidlets that don’t have anything — Mama loves when that happens!

So back to the room and getting a place for #3 to call her own…well, in the end Mama decided that she wasn’t going to get a room of her own FOR NOW. Sharing isn’t so bad, is it? Mama was an only child growing up so Mama always had her own room. However, plenty of people didn’t and you now what, Mama is pretty sure they all survived it. The only problem now is…she’s going to be sharing it with her older brother. His room is blue and has many, many cars in it. She will for sure be a Tomboy…or not.

In order to make a little space of her own in the room, Mama is going to get new bedding for the crib…girl bedding to fit in the boy room. Here’s the choices that Mama has narrowed it down to…help Mama decorate and tell Mama which one is your favorite, pretty please?!

Mama has been coveting this set since the beginning of summer…then they sold out of it. Now, it’s back but Mama can’t decide if it’s just too out of season. Lily Nursery Bedding, $18-$99, at potterybarnkids.com. P.S. Mama also wants that crib but that’s a different story…

This set is another one that Mama has been eyeing for awhile and it’s such a modern departure from the first one. Thumbs up? Rows and Rows of Roses Crib Set, $360, at landofnod.com.

Mama saw this set on sale at a local boutique for about half the price — is it worth it just because it’s a deal at $150? Taj Crib Bedding Set at rikshawdesign.com. Another bonus…it goes great with that Calypso St. Barth for Target pouf that Mama hunted down too!

Is there anything better than the designs of Serena & Lily? And the name Lulu is on Mama’s short list (although, it’s a little close to Lily-girl and might drive a Mama of 3 nuts!). Like? Lulu Crib Bedding Set, $325, at serenaandlily.com.

Well…it is a blue room and you know how Mama feels about NYC…is this one? Skyline Crib Set, $360, at dwellstudio.com.

Ready, set, go and decorate the crib — which one will it be??? Have a great Halloween weekend! XOXO, Mama

Where to wear the baby…?

Mama just read an article that said that Mama needs to change her schedule. No more staying up late at night plugging away at the computer. It’s not good for your sleep and you are less likely to make mistakes if you just wake-up earlier. There is definitely some truth to that as Mama has found herself in the midst of a sentence and then all of a sudden nodding off with the lights on, computer on and nothing but a half done post to show for it. However, it seems that at night after the kiddos go to bed is when it’s the most calm and there is actually time to do something. No more running off to fold laundry because you heard the buzzer, no more watching the clock so that you can go shuttle the kids to and from school or to their various activities, no dishes to be done…because really, it will all be there later. All of it. So in other words, get some sleep and take the time to work when you’re at your best — Mama likes the thinking on that…especially since there will soon be another little person to take care of that will have her own demands and schedule. Hang in there with Mama as we all get the groove of the changing times…because Mama may not always be on time but I’ll definitely BE THERE!

So this week is what they call International Babywearing week. While Mama doesn’t really consider your baby to be an accessory, they certainly can be. Yes, you can wear them from birth to…oh, my…the preschool years perhaps. Although once the kids could walk Mama all but gave-up on wearing any sort of baby, simply because they are HEAVY little things and well, Mama needs to build up those muscles. However, Mama does have friends that wear their children (sometimes two at once — one in the front and one in the back) and it doesn’t bother them a bit. They love it and are advocates for babywearing (which simply means holding or carrying your child(ren) in a cloth carrier) and it is actually a skill. Have you ever seen some of those carriers that you have to wrap and wrap around you and tie in knots and all sorts of different places?! It MOST definitely is a skill and in fact you can even get a certification in babywearing to teach others the skill and educate other moms about it.

If you think about it, our ancestors have been babywearing for generations and generations so it’s a natural part of being a Mama and caring and nurturing for your young. However, some baby carriers have gotten a bad rap — most recently slings for causing suffocation. Rest assured, if used properly slings are certainly safe and are a great carrier for the newborn baby. Mama is actually in the market for a new carrier since Baby #3 is going to make an appearance soon…hmmm…so many choices on how to wear her FASHIONABLY and SAFELY…which one to choose?!

Mama knows so many parents that are choosing the ERGOBaby Carrier these days because it can be used from the infant stage as a front carrier up to 90 lbs. as a back carrier. It has an ergonomically correct positioning so you avoid that awful back pain that Mama was talking about earlier and it also supports correct positioning for your baby/toddler. Dads also like this carrier because it fits their shape (tested up to adults 6’6″ and has a 57″ waist belt). The carrier we had previously, never quite fit him. This could definitely be a top choice for Mama…especially now since it comes in Petunia PickleBottom Patterns! ERGObaby Organic Petunia Pickle Bottom Carrier, $160, at ergobabycarriers.com.

Another favorite among Mamas is the Moby Wrap where you can wear two babies at once. While it looks complicated, after a few times of learning to wrap the Moby around your back and shoulders to completely support the baby, it is very, very easy and comfortable. Made of a sturdy, durable fabric the Moby you can adjust the fit of your wrap by how tightly you wrap around your back and shoulders so as baby grows, you give them more room without having to adjust any straps or buckles. Also anyone can use it since all Mobys are the same amount of fabric. While the ERGObaby is great for infants bigger than 4 months and toddlers, the Moby Wrap is best suited for newborns to infants/toddlers up to 35 lbs. It’s a great carrier for infants that like to be held at all times and they can be close to Mama’s heartbeat and soothe themselves to sleep. It also leaves you hands-free to deal with other children and the like. Another great babywearing option…Moby Wrap, $44.95, at mobywrap.com.

One of the classic carrier names that everyone will recognize is the BABYBJORN. Who doesn’t (or didn’t) have one of these? Mama used it both with Baby Boy and Lily-girl and it got us through the good times and the bad. However with the classic carrier, Mama did start to get a bit uncomfortable as they got bigger simply because most of the weight was carried through the shoulders. Since then the company has introduced the new BABYBJORN Comfort Carrier with an ergonomic waist belt. While it mimics the ERGOBaby carrier, the comfort carrier is for children only up to 2 years old (or 31 lbs.) and is a front carrier only. In fact, most of the parents that are using this carrier are Dads because of it’s easy positioning and how you can have the child’s legs in normal or wide position. It’s definitely a great upgrade and option from the classic carrier and one that Mama is also seriously considering…hmm…so many options! BABYBJORN Organic Comfort Carrier, $179.95, at diapers.com.

Other Mamas prefer the Ring Slings which provide versatility and allow baby to sit upright in the sling once they are able to do so based on weight and neck strength. One of the most popular ring slings is the Maya Wrap. It comes in a variety of colors and has light padding on the shoulders for cushioning. It is recommended for newborns 8 lbs. to toddlers 35 lbs. and has a built-in pocket for keys, phone, diapers, etc. so you can also truly be hands-free. It also allows you to breastfeed discreetly without taking baby out of the sling. Just make sure you read the instructions for optimum safety. It’s a great first carrier for first-time babywearers! Maya Wrap Baby Sling, $74.95, at mayawrap.com.

Another possibility for babywearing is the Mei Tai Baby Carrier, a version of the traditional Chinese baby carrier that has a body panel, waist and shoulder straps to tie and hold baby. One of these is the BabyHawk Baby Carrier, starting at $89, at babyhawk.com. While it offers tons of styles and patterns for you to choose from, there isn’t going to be as much support in this carrier as there is in ERGObaby or BABYBJORN just because of the lack of padding and ergonomic support. Some people need it — others don’t and prefer the “less is more” approach. The BabyHawk Mei Tai Carrier is adjustable and also fits larger frames and carries newborns (8 lbs.) to toddlers (18 mths. or 45 lbs.) then you can also graduate to the Toddler Mei Tai Carrier. They are made close to Mama in Oceanside, CA and you can customize them all different options to truly make it your own. A great option for those that like to babywear in style!

There are many, many more options for babywearing but these are some of the most popular carriers and methods and ones that Mama is seriously considering….So tell Mama, how do you wear your baby?

October must-haves…!

Raise your hand if you’re not ready for the holidays…! Sure we’ve been talking about fall for the last two months but now it’s official — it’s here and it’s October. Mama has grown to love October over the last few years. It may have started when Mama had kids because that seems to make going to the pumpkin patch, dressing up in costume and trick-or-treating much more acceptable. Once you pass your teen years you tend to lose the fall spirit until you start to have kids…but of course, everything with kids is more fun!

So while Mama is still so ill-prepared for the birth of Baby #3, it would be fantastic to have an October birthday in the family. We love throwing Halloween parties every year and Mama is just dying to plan a birthday party at a pumpkin patch. What do you think of early November birthdays still celebrating Halloween…too much of a stretch?

But along with Halloween, Mama is looking forward to baking with pumpkin, making homemade applesauce and spending some much needed time indoors watching the rain (yes, it occasionally rains in So. Cal) and getting some items marked off the long to-do list. Happy October and happy shopping!

Must-read: Tomorrow on Thursday, October 6, 2011, over 2 million parents and children have pledged to read Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney to break last year’s Read for the Record as part of the Jumpstart campaign to encourage early childhood education and literacy. Take ten minutes to take the pledge HERE and read this fun book with your child. Better yet, invite over the neighborhood kids, do a fun craft and have a snack — what a great playdate idea. For more information and to make your reading count, visit ReadfortheRecord.org.

Must-have: Don’t underestimate the power of a good dress. Having at least one or two key dresses that you can make casual or dress-up in your closet is key to style success from season to season. Mama is going for the sweater dress this fall! Jolie Knit Dress, $128, at garnethill.com.

Must-have: Remember Mama’s Missoni for Target mission (who could forget?!), well Mama actually picked up two of these gems that same day AND by far they were the best buy. Found in Target and WalMart, Anchor Hocking Pumpkin Jar, $4.99 — amazing price and a great centerpiece that you can fill with candy or flowers! They also come in orange…if you can find them.

Must-do: Mama was giving the kiddos a bath the other night and happened to take a look at the bath toys…EWWW! Take it from Mama and make this a priority this month to either clean out and throw away some of the older bath toys or clean them very heavily!! Mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar with 2 parts of hot water and soak, soak and then scrub those toys clean. If you notice any scum or black spots that won’t come off, it may be time to dispose of those toys. You can also use a bleach mixture but make sure you dilute it really well. Bath bugs be gone!!

Must-eat: Like Mama mentioned earlier, there’s nothing better than eating pumpkin in October. If you’re a pumpkin fan, try these Pumpkin Dessert Squares with a Shortbread Crust from Food.com. Mama is going to make them for the school’s Fall Festival…mmmm…Mama hopes they make it there and not just the crumbs from us eating them! If you love chocolate and pumpkin, try the recipe from the Picky-Palate…delicious…

What’s on your October must list?

Pouf crazy…!

So what do you think? Are you loving the new design as much as Mama is? While there’s still a few tweaks to make here and there…Mama is so excited with the style and believe Mama…there’s more good things coming! Great giveaways, more styling and a new shop….

But in the meantime, it’s Friday…TGIF and all that jazz…and Mama is ready for the weekend to get some organizing done and catch-up on some much needed beauty sleep. This 6 a.m. up and at ‘em school routine is exhausting…at least on the weekends we sleep until 6:30 a.m.

By now, Mama is sure you’ve seen the empty Missoni shelves at Target and have watched the video Mama did on the loot scored at the 8 a.m. launch on Tuesday…but actually, there is one very amazing thing that is still available online from the collection — POUFS! Mama is so obsessed with poufs lately that well, there’s not exactly room for all the ones Mama wants in the house. Remember when Mama spent a week hunting down the Calypso St. Barth for Target Silver Pouf that was sold out online?! Mama finally found it in a store by chance and it’s the centerpiece of the nursery. How can one not want a fantastic pouf for $59.99…when normally they’re over $200.

Here’s a look at some of the best poufs Mama has seen in a long time — really, what’s better than portable furniture?! Happy Pouf Shopping!

From the coveted Missoni for Target collection this Floral Square Pouf is a perfect addition to any room, $79.99, at target.com.

Mama loves this one for Lily-girl’s room but it’s would like nice in a closet/wardrobe area too! Fleur Embroidered Pouf, $69, at urbanoutfitters.com.

These are great for placing by the fireplace and drinking a cup of hot chocolate. Knitted Poufs, $89.95, at cb2.com.

Mama is speechless…this is beautiful and HANDMADE! Felt Flower Pouf, $230, at etsy.com.

Circus, Circus…!

Doesn’t everyone have dreams of running off to the circus? Well at least you did until you read (or saw) Water For Elephants…right?! Or maybe it’s still one of those dreams that you’re hoping to achieve. For Mama and as a Mama, everyday is like living in a circus. There’s always some new trick to learn and a dangling treat at the end of the stick that one always seems to go after. It’s a never-ending circus…

So what’s one to do after living day-to-day life in the circus? Well…go to the REAL circus, of course! Yes, Mama is talking about the one and only Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. It’s coming to town this week and we couldn’t be more excited to see the tigers and elephants. If you’re around San Diego this week, check it out July 14-17 with tickets starting at only $15, it definitely a summer activity the kids will not forget. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.com AND it’s their new Fully Charged show…should be a good one!

Not in San Diego…don’t worry, you can put on your own circus at home with these lovely games and activities that will keep the kids entertained for hours…and then You Tube the videos please so Mama can really believe she’s not the only one that really lives in a circus…!

Juggling for the Complete Klutz (30th Anniversary Edition) (Klutz S.)

But the kids love trying to juggle and this KLUTZ kit couldn’t be easier with instructions and soft balls for them to learn with, $10.17, at amazon.com.
