What in the world is up with America’s obsession with cupcakes? Yes, those tiny delicacies that typically were reserved for kid’s birthday parties so as to minimize the mess and the sugar high that came with eating and serving cake. When did the cupcake explode into an overnight sensation becoming the star of TV shows, bakeries, fashion and pets (seriously…pupcakes!)?
Most of the success can be traced right back to Candace Nelson (and her sidekick and husband ‘aka’ Charles) and Sprinkles — The Original Cupcake Bakery which opened in Beverly Hills in 2003. So essentially the cupcake craze has been happening for about 9 years…and there is no end in sight…thankfully!
Okay, Mama will be the first to admit that Mama is one of those crazed cupcake fans. So when San Diego started buzzing about Sprinkles coming to town…Mama just knew that the cupcake gods were listening to her. However, Mama had never had the opportunity to taste the famous Sprinkles cupcakes until two days ago — now there’s no turning back. Not only were the cupcakes delicious and frosted to perfection but Mama had the opportunity to chat with and frost (cupcakes) with two of the nicest people in the cupcake business, Candace and Charles Nelson. They are super generous and well…know their cupcakes. What sets them apart from the rest of the “cupcakerys” (besides being the original)? Put them to the test yourself and you’ll see. While sometimes people take something so simple like a cupcake and turn it into something completely complex with too many flavors, Sprinkles keeps it classic and simple — just as the cupcake was intended to be. Also, everything is handcrafted — no pastry bags to frost cupcakes (yeah for that!).
Don’t have a Sprinkles in your town? Not to worry, you can try your own hand at making their cupcakes with the mixes that come complete with the signature dots. Available at williams-sonoma.com, $14. Want to put your own touch on the cupcakes (you know they will never share their secret to making the dots!)? Mama loves the cupcake kits from Meri Meri — so many themes to choose from like Fairy Wishes

I am from the South, so I have to stick with the red velvet cupcake. I love how you made this entire post cupcake-centric! The apron is adorable.
