Mama saw the new Cirque du Soleil show, Kooza, two nights ago and I’m still holding my breath! In awe of course, not in fear. It’s so amazing that there are so many talented and fearless acrobats and basically, just daredevils, to put on an amazing show.
Kooza is Cirque’s new touring show that tells the story of a little boy searching for his place in the world when he is met with a cast of different characters that each teach him a valuable lesson. The show is a mixture of clowning and acrobatic skills like, tightrope, trapeze (rememeber when Mama did that…!), catortionists, the Wheel of Death, a Unicycle routine, hoops manipulation, and chair balancing.
Mama loved the simplicity of the production. Ususally when you see Cirque you are more focused on the element effects like water and sound versus the artists and their talents. In Kooza, all the focus remains where it should be — with the artists. You sit on the edge of your seat waiting for what is to happen next. Mama thinks it the element of surprise that keeps fans coming back for more.
Definitely the highlight of the show are the contortionists that manage to twist their bodies in ways Mama didn’t even know where possible and the tightrope routine that involves two bicycles and a chair — it all leaves you breathless!
Mama recommends making it a date night and seeing the show — I mean how often does a world renowned production make it to your hometown?! There are a few scary parts to the show that involve skeletons and the clown routines are a bit on the raunchy side. Younger kids will love the acrobats and the humor will probably go over their head. The show is also a bit long for little ones to sit still, the show runs about two and half hours with a 30 minute intermission.
The show is playing in San Diego NOW through March 21st at the Del Mar Fairgrounds under the tent they raise called, the Grand Chapiteau (Big Top). For ticket information visit, CirqueDuSoleil.com. Next stop for Kooza is Portland, Seattle, Vancouver and Miami.
Oh, and if a trip to Vegas is in your future….check out the newest Cirque show, Viva ELVIS! Mama thinks a road trip is in order!
