Salty Beauty

by Christine | January 11th, 2010

Mama had a wild weekend of playing the new Wii game Just Dance (best game ever!) with the San Diego Mommy Bloggers and recovery just doesn’t get any easier at my age! But it can be done with one extremely multi-purpose product by the name of Epsom Salt…or as the chemists call it, magnesium sulfate…

Here’s a few tips from the Epsom Salt Council on how to make Epsom Salt part of your at-home beauty routine and help you recover from a wild weekend like Mama, that take care of any part of their beauty, from the hair to the nails with the best walk-in nail salons nearby, these are just a few things you can do to look and feel even great.

  • Exfoliate — Mix 2 cups of Epsom Salt with 1/4 cup of petroleum jelly and a few drops of lavender essential oil. Use the mixture to gently scrub away dry skin patches.
  • Facial —  Mix 1/2 TSP of Epsom Salt into cleansing cream for a deep-pore cleansing. Massage on skin. Rinse with cool water. Pat dry.
  • Bath soak — Add two cups of Epsom Salt to the water in a standard-sized bathtub; soak for at least 12 minutes, three times weekly. For an extra treat, add a few drops of eucalyptus oil for a refreshing scent.
  • Hair volumizer —  Combine equal parts of warm, deep conditioner and Epsom Salt. Work the warm mixture through your hair and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse.
  • Foot scrub — Mix 2 cups of Epsom Salt with 1/4 cup of petroleum jelly and a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Use the mixture to gently scrub the heels and dry, rough patches on the feet. Repeat every few days.
Or if gardening is more your thing…Epsom Salt helps seeds germinate, makes plants grow bushier, produces more flowers, increases chlorophyll production and deters pests, such as slugs and voles.  With Spring coming, you should have always keep a little Epsom Salt on hand (it costs less than a Starbucks)! Mama’s brown thumb is now a green thumb thanks to my salty friend. For houseplants, add 2 tablespoons of Epsom Salt per gallon of water to feed your houseplants monthly.

But beware…Epsom Salt is also a natural laxative so it can be ingested in small quantities but Mama rather not go there…! Always handy to have on hand for whenever the occasion shall arise and it costs just about nothing. Available at Amazon.com, $1.89.

My philosophy is simple: just because you're a mom doesn't mean you have to forgo style or your life. You can do it all with a little help from Mama. Mama makes life easier by doing all the shopping, crafting and ranting for you because really...what Mama has the time for that?! Mama will not lie, I can bake but if you're looking for cooking tips you might be better off going someplace else! Let's stay connected!
