This morning I spent a few minutes with my friends at FOX5 San Diego talking about DIY No-Sew Costumes and other, easy ideas to get into the Halloween spirit. My tips are recapped below and I’m always looking for feedback so let me know what you think and thanks for reading!
Costumes For Kids
· Involve your kids in the costume making as much as possible. It’s fun and then they will be sure to wear it with pride on Halloween!
· Super Hero – kids will love this one as they can use the cape for dress-up play and not just on Halloween. For the Red Cape – take a 1/2 yard of jersey fabric (it makes a natural hem!) and fold it in half. Then cut out a semi-circle at the top fold to make the neck. Lay 1 yard of ribbon at the top and fold over the fabric to make a hem. Glue down. Let dry for about 2 hours. Letter for shirts: use felt fabric and cut out whatever letter you want and glue to t-shirt or cape.
· Use face paint – it’s hard to get kids to wear something over their face like a mask but they love face paint! Use face paint to paint a blue mask for your Super Hero. Mama likes the Alex Toys Face Painting Set, $9.99, available at www.amazon.com.
· Cotton Candy or Cloud– I love this one for girls! You take a pink or blue shirt (whichever your child prefers) and a matching pink or blue headband and glue on spray painted cotton balls all over the front and back and to the top of the headband. Wear white tights or pants on the bottom to replicate the cone of the Cotton Candy. Instant Costume!!
· Fairy Skirt – for an easy costume, take a tulle and wrap it around your child’s waist to make a band. Tie tulle lengthwise across the band to make a skirt. Then glue flowers all around.
· Zebra – take white duct tape and wrap around black pants and black shirt to make a Zebra pattern. A V-shaped pattern looks best.
· Treat Bags – felt, paint and ribbon make for an easy DIY treat bag.
Costumes For Adults
· Pop Culture Costumes/Reality Costumes are HOT for this year – think Kate Gosselin, Michael Jackson, President Obama.
· Take what you have around the house and buy one key accessory to make the costume – a wig, etc.
· If you don’t feel like dressing up but want to be festive – try the following:
o Hostesses – festive aprons are the perfect costume for parties! Try the cute, frilly ones from Haute Hostesses Aprons, $100, wear plain or dress-up with a witches hat. You can also embellish a witch hat to make it your own with feathers and flowers from the craft store.
o Moms – Halloween shirts are always fun and festive! Mama loves the cute one from LTDChix that says “Living the Dream,” $30.
o Moms-to-be – The Bella B Maternity Jack-O-Lantern Shirt, $25, is just adorable for dressing up your future bambino!

My philosophy is simple: just because you're a mom doesn't mean you have to forgo style or your life. You can do it all with a little help from Mama. Mama makes life easier by doing all the shopping, crafting and ranting for you because really...what Mama has the time for that?! Mama will not lie, I can bake but if you're looking for cooking tips you might be better off going someplace else!

These are so helpful! I'd much rather make our own costumes and model thriftiness and creativitiy for my kids. Thanks,Melissahttp://imaginationsoup.net
