It’s official, summer is now over and we are rolling out the welcome mat for the fall season. Today is the official First Day of Autumn! Being in beautiful Southern California, it’s a little hard to say goodbye to summer since it stays warm and sunny until mid-November and even then the Autumn season isn’t filled with Chicago’s blustery winds or Seattle’s rainy days and nights. However, you can feel a little chill in the air and the leaves start to fall and change colors — such a beautiful sight!
Getting back to Mama’s roots, I wanted to share a favorite fall craft of mine — Pinecone Bird Feeders. It’s fun for kids and well…for the birds! Tweet, Tweet!
Pinecone Bird Feeders
You will need: one pinecone per child; one jar of Crisco or Peanut Butter; a plastic knife; bird seed; and string.
- Take the pinecone and wrap a string around the stem, looping it a few times to ensure it will be secure. Tie off at the top and tie into a bow leaving room to hang onto a tree.
- Take the knife and coat the inside and outside edges and in-between spaces with the Crisco or Peanut Butter.
- Over newspaper or a paper plate, sprinkle and roll the coated pinecone in bird seed making sure to cover all the Crisco or Peanut Butter.
- Let set for about an hour.
- Hang it outside and watch the birds flock to the feeder!
These feeders also make a nice handmade gift for Grandma and Grandpa for the holidays! Wrap in cellophane with a nice bow along with a bird watching book – Viola, instant gift!

My philosophy is simple: just because you're a mom doesn't mean you have to forgo style or your life. You can do it all with a little help from Mama. Mama makes life easier by doing all the shopping, crafting and ranting for you because really...what Mama has the time for that?! Mama will not lie, I can bake but if you're looking for cooking tips you might be better off going someplace else!
